A list of basic Materials and equipment a beginner would typically need to learn or start with, you do not have to get fancy.
1- Crochet Hook, get a 5MM (H/8) aluminum hook
3- Scissors
4- Yarn Needle
5- Stitch marker, you can use a safety pin or paper clip
7- Stitch holder, you can use a safety pin or paper clip
8-Row Counter, you can use pen and paper
1- crochet Hooks: These come in different sizes and are used to create stitches. Start with a set that includes a range of hook sizes, such as 3.5mm (E/4), 4.0mm (G/6), and 5.5mm (I/9), as they are commonly used for various projects.
"In crochet, there are different numbering systems for hooks around the world, since I am in Canada, I will mostly be using the Metric system and the US system. The US system labels hooks with letters, such as B, G, and J, while the metric system uses numbers, like 2.25mm, 3.5mm, and 5.0mm. These numbers and letters indicate the size of the hook and help us choose the right one for our projects.
Here is an example of a size chart.
2- Yarn/thread: Yarns come in various weights and colours. Choose yarn in a weight suitable for beginners, such as medium or worsted weight, symbolized by a number 4 on the label. Acrylic yarn is often recommended for beginners due to its affordability and ease of use. And don't forget to grab a couple of different colours to practice with!"
3- Scissors: A trusty pair of scissors. They'll come in handy for cutting yarn and snipping any loose ends. Make sure they're sharp and easy to handle
4- Yarn Needle: These large-eyed, blunt-tipped needles are used for weaving in loose ends and joining crochet pieces together.
5- Stitch marker: These small, removable markers help identify specific stitches or sections in your work. They are particularly useful in more complex patterns.
6- Measuring Tape: A flexible measuring tape helps you keep track of your project's size and gauge.
7- Stitch holders: or Safety Pins, can be used to hold stitches in place when you need to temporarily set aside your work.
8- Row Counter: A row counter is a helpful tool for keeping track of the number of rows in your project, especially for larger or more complex patterns.
9- Crochet pattern or Book: Look for beginner-friendly crochet patterns or books that provide step-by-step instructions and simple projects to practice with.
